What is Home and Community Care?
As defined by Alberta Health Services, Home and Community care is publicly funded personal and healthcare services for clients of all ages living in a private residence or other setting, such as suites in a retirement residence or lodge.
The program assists people to remain well, safe and independent in their home for long as possible.
Its philosophy promotes client independence, and supplements care and supports provided by families and community services.
Who is it for?
It is for individuals who have a valid Alberta Health Care Insurance (Health care card).
AHS’ home care program provides help with activities of daily living that the client cannot do themselves or cannot get help with from another source; these are often activities that are considered necessary for the client to safely maintain their independence, like personal hygiene or medication management.
What are Activities of Daily Living?
As defined by Alberta Health Services, ADLs are: personal hygiene, dressing, bathing, grooming, eating, toileting, transferring, mobility, rehabilitation exercises, medication assistance, respiratory care.
How about Homemaking?
Homemaking services includes tasks that are essential to keeping you in your home, such as cleaning bathrooms, cleaning mobility equipment, incontinence laundry, and removing garbage. Alberta Health Services does not support stand-alone homemaking services.
How do I receive Home Care?
AHS has two main methods of providing home care services. First option is through their vendor providers. Second option is through the CDHCI (Client Directed Home Care Invoicing) program.
What is CDHCI (Client Directed Home Care Invoicing)?
Client Directed Home Care Invoicing (CDHCI) is an option for Alberta Health Services (AHS) Home and Community Care clients to manage their own care. Clients choose an agency such as TotalCare Concierge that is registered with Alberta Blue Cross to provide the number of AHS authorized pre-approved hours per month.
What is the difference between AHS Vendors and CDHCI?
AHS Home Care through AHS Vendors are ideal for clients who wants AHS to manage their care. Through this option, clients are assigned one of the four companies AHS works with to provide home care services and this assignment is based on the geographical area the client lives in.
AHS CDHCI program allows for more flexibility and control in your care. It is ideal for clients who wishes to have more control over their care at home and can manage directing how that care is provided.
Why should I choose CDHCI and TotalCare Concierge?
There are a lot of benefits to choosing CDHCI. Examples are:
- better control over how your care plan is implemented,
- ability to choose your caregivers,
- ability to have consistency in who is providing you care,
- not being rushed,
- fully meeting your wants and needs.
